Consultation has concluded
The demand for Electric Vehicles worldwide has spurred the Province's attention to ensuring municipalities can support resident needs as we shift from combustion to electric engines. As a result, the Town of Amherstburg has been enthusiastically working towards providing Electric vehicles (E.V.) Charging Stations, executing Council's approvals, and their direction from May 9, 2022. (see the report to Council in the Documents Section of this project)
The location of the four approved E.V. Charging Stations was determined in partnership with Essex Powerlines Corporation, considering the power availability and the installation's feasibility. The sites will be:
Toddy Jones Park, Laird & Fort Street
Municipal Lot at Ramsay & Richmond
The Libro Centre, 3295 Meloche Road
*maps for each location can be found in the Documents Section of this project page
Each E.V. Charging Station will have two charging ports, resulting in 8 publicly available charging spots for E.V. vehicles.
Essex Energy started its work on October 5, and each location will experience minor disruption, including limitations on parking availability.
UPDATE: The Libro Centre, Ramsay Street Public Parking Lot and Austin Toddy Jones Park (at Laird Avenue) EV Charging Stations have been installed and are ready for use. To use the systems, E.V. owners will need to download the ChargePoint App to access and pay for the use of the system. ChargePoint is the contact for system users, and their support number is provided on the units should users have any questions or concerns.

Why were Level 2 instead of Level 3 stations selected?

The EV charging stations are a service the Town wanted to provide not only for climate change, but also to reduce range anxiety by providing EV owners the ability to charge their vehicle while shopping, dining and or attending events in Amherstburg. Level 2 charging stations best fit the criteria for the service intend as the user can get a solid charge for the vehicle over a 1.5 to 2 hours time frame. While Level 3 stations are faster to charge, they are primarily found in locations where the user wants to be back on the road as quickly as possible. The Level 3 units are also substantially higher in cost, both for the units themselves, as well as the infrastructure required to power them. This would have significantly reduced the number of EV charging stations the Town could have provided to just one rather the four units being installed.
