Image of grass and trees. The land at 209 Victoria Street South was originally part of the Bell Farm and was acquired by the Town in 1933. Eventually, this grew to become the largest recreational park in Amherstburg. In 1977, the same year Murray Smith was named "Citizen of the Year" by the AMA Chamber of Commerce, the name was officially changed to H. Murray Smith Centennial Park. Smith served as mayor from 1965 to 1978, during which he was instrumental in constructing the Community Centre Arena and the development of Centennial Park.

The land continues to be a public space, and a portion was redeveloped as the home of Amherstburg's new North Star High School. Let's continue to work on creating a beautiful space for residents of all ages and abilities.

When viewing the plans for H. Murray Smith Centennial Park, you may also want to consider the plans identified in the Jack Purdie Park Project on Talk the Burg. These two parks are less than 0.8 kilometres from one another. To best accommodate our community's greatest needs, we have taken a strategic approach for the location of amenities to ensure we deliver fiscally responsible plans. View all concept drawings n the Documents Section of the project page.

  • Council Resolution: Jack Purdie and H. Murray Smith Centennial Park Master Plan Approval & Deferred to 2023 Budget (see Council Resolution in Documents)
